The Secretary of State for Defence says the government was not serious enough about the needs of troops in the early years of conflicts in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bob Ainsworth is quoted by the Daily Telegraph today as saying British government ministers did not respond quickly enough to the military's complaints about inadequate equipment and poor pay.



He also accepted his own intellectual limitations and insisted he was still the best man for the job in these difficult times.
