No more Doom & Gloom

Later today Gordon Brown will try to reconnect with his party, and rescue his drifting leadership, by using his speech to the Labour Party conference today to return to the good old days of BLAIR.

Where are they all

Today Alistair Darling addressed the Labour Party conference on the crisis facing the economy. And the hall was half empty.

It was the same yesterday, for the Prime Minister's "operation fightback" rallying cry to his party, the hall probably wasn't even half full.

A bitter pill to swallow

Lord Mandelson the business secretary says it is 'absolutely ridiculous' to suggest Brown has a problem with pill use, and criticises Andrew Marr for asking the PM about the rumours..

Mandelson said it was "absolutely ridiculous" to suggest the PM had a problem with pill use, and blamed politically motivated bloggers for raising the possibility.

90 Minutes for Brown

Faced with the threat of an election defeat, Alistair Darling likens Labour to a gutless football side where the team have allowed their heads to drop well before the final whistle. "We don't look as if we have got fire in our bellies," he says in an interview with the Observer.

Britain's Everyday Heroes

H.M. The Black Redactors

The Daily Telegraph discloses, the expenses claims made by MPs were leaked because of anger over the Government’s failure to equip the Armed Forces properly while politicians lavished taxpayers’ money on themselves.

Workers who processed the MPs’ claims included serving soldiers, who were moonlighting between tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan to earn extra cash for body armour and other vital equipment.

The soldiers were furious when they saw what MPs, including the Prime Minister, were claiming for and their anger convinced one of their civilian colleagues that taxpayers had a right to know how their money was being spent.

withering attack

Charles Clarke, the former home secretary, has launched a withering attack on Gordon Brown, telling the Prime Minister to quit or Labour will be condemned to at least a decade in opposition.

In an interview with the London Evening Standard, Charles Clarke described Gordon Brown’s team at No 10 as the “weakest I've seen ever”.

Czech Mate

EU leaders are said to be furious that the Czech Republic is planning to delay signing the Lisbon treaty for up to six months even if the Irish vote "yes" in their referendum next month.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President who helped to draw up the treaty after the French and Dutch voted against the EU Constitution, has warned Prague that it faces "consequences" if it does not swiftly follow an Irish "yes" with its own ratification.

In a recent poll, 39% of respondents said they trusted David Cameron to make the right choices when it came to 'slashing' public spending. This compared with 24% for Gordon Brown and 17% for Nick Clegg.

The European Commission has warned Lloyds Banking Group that it may have to split off Halifax as punishment for the billions of pounds of state aid that it has received. The EU Competition Commissioner has yet to make a final decision but banking sources say it is clear that she is planning to impose draconian penalties on Lloyds (The Times).

The ass you thought you saved

Don't forget, it was Gordon Brown the British Prime Minister who brokered the deal and it was Lord Mandleson the British Business Secretary who allowed the merger to go ahead. The order was laid in Parliament on 7 October 2008 and came into force on the 24th of October 2008.

So much for the Sovereignty of Parliament.

Captain Cuts

After spending months insisting that Labour would invest while the Conservatives cut, Crash Gordon finally conceded that he too will have to slash spending to reduce the deficit.

Speaking at the TUC Congress in Liverpool, Gordon Brown announced a string of sweeteners to soften up the unions ahead of expected announcements on cuts later in the Autumn.

"oblivious to economic conditions"

Lord Mandelson is seeking to regain the initiative in the public spending row by claiming services can improve without more major investment.

"Our 1997 manifesto described the New Labour approach as being 'wise spenders, not big spenders'. This is and remains a core New Labour principle. We do not believe that we should try to solve problems simply by throwing money at them."

New Labour 1997 manifesto

We have experienced the slowest average growth rate of any similar period since the second world war. There has been a fundamental failure to tackle the underlying causes of inflation, of low growth and of unemployment. These are:

too much economic instability, with wild swings from boom to bust

too little investment in education and skills, and in the application of new technologies

too few opportunities to find jobs, start new businesses or become self-employed

too narrow an industrial base and too little sense of common purpose in the workplace or across the nation.

Labour's housing strategy will address the needs of homeowners and tenants alike.

We will reject the boom and bust policies which caused the collapse of the housing market.

We will work with mortgage providers to encourage greater provision of more flexible mortgages to protect families in a world of increased job insecurity.

AND

"By 2010, we want Britain to break away from the decades of boom and bust, as we stick to clear rules for spending and borrowing. We will take no risks with economic policy, make no compromise on fiscal responsibility"
- Labour Manifesto, 2001

"Forward to increased prosperity, not back to boom and bust"
- Labour Manifesto, 2005

The Pantomime Stalking Horse

Close aides to Gordon Brown believe he faces defeat in an autumn leadership contest. Amid mounting speculation that a concerted attempt to remove the Prime Minister will be staged after the Labour Party conference, loyalist supporters report a growing sense of defeatism in Number 10.

The feasibility of a challenge depends on a serious candidate being prepared to take on a potentially self-destructive mission.

Full Mental Jacket

Yesterday a determined Gordon Brown made a passionate defence of the campaign in Afghanistan. The Prime Minister told the International Institute of Strategic Studies he never took military action lightly - especially when Britain's security was at stake.

"Each time, I ask myself if we can justify sending our young men and women to fight for this cause. My answer has always been yes"....
Gordon Brown

So why are we investing in bizarre projects to promote equality in Afghanistan while our soldiers are dying?

Germany Calling

The long-awaited music video "Scared of Lisbon" of the the band "die Bandbreite" has been published. A great, moving, and courageous eurosceptical song. It will reach the hearts of many people. For the protection of peace, human rights, democracy, and public services. The law suit of a German human rights activist (file number 2 BvR 1958/08), which has been, besides Dr. Gauweiler's complaint, one of the main reasons for the first Lisbon judgement, has been one of the main inspirations of the song. And many eurosceptical people have sent pictures to contribute to the video.

Within four days, nearly 29.000 people have watched it.This is the start for the critical democratical mass. A strong support for the Irish "No" campaign on the Lisbon Treaty. Please inform all people, for whom this song can be important.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=no_Pv7McXVg

Please put a link to the song. It has already encouraged many people to read the Lisbon Treaty - within four days. To enjoy "Scared of Lisbon" offline, you can also buy the CD. For more information on the band, please look at www.diebandbreite.de

Cuts

Several Cabinet ministers are privately urging Gordon Brown to change his policy of refusing to even countenance the talk of cuts and instead paint David Cameron as a man who would savage public spending.
